Xinhua said in an opinion piece the widening investigations into alleged wrongdoing in the China drug market will not be enough and called for even greater reforms in the hospital business model. The state-run news agency, which reflects the views of the ruling Communist Party of China, said hospitals must be allowed to obtain funding from sources other than by relying on increasing the costs for drugs they prescribe and dispense. The agency noted the call by the National Health and Family Planning Commission for higher salaries for medical workers so they would not be enticed by bribes, kickbacks and other corruptive activities.
